Picture this: In your role, you are the sole HR person and a team of one. You are responsible for establishing an HR department and introducing new HR policies. There are numerous urgent inquiries waiting for you to address promptly, but this needs to be done while simultaneously leading a major relocation project. All of this is happening during the peak of a global pandemic. Sounds insane, doesn't it? This was me. What a time! I am grateful for the experience and all that it taught me, even though it was crazy. Despite the bumps and turns, we survived! Are you in a position where you're charged with juggling several high-level projects at once? Here are 5 tips that I know will help you tremendously: 1. Prioritize your projects based on their importance. As a leader, people are counting on you to meet their needs quickly. If you're not careful, those demands can become so overwhelming that you'll have no idea where to begin. Without a priority list, you'll lose your focus. Assess all of your projects and sort them by their importance. The sooner you do this, the better. 2. Set boundaries! Once you've created a list of priorities based on importance, stick to your plan. Don't try to do everything at once when pressured. You're one person and you can't do everything overnight. 3. Communicate your timeline! Your list has been created and you have a clear understanding of your priorities, but are your colleagues aware of the same? By clearly communicating your priorities and desired timeline, you can manage expectations. Folks will know that you're not neglecting their inquiries and they can anticipate when you'll reach the items that matter to them. 4. Delegate! Yes, you're a department of one, but if someone offers to help, accept their offer! If your organization has a volunteer pool, use it. If you have board members with relevant project management expertise, consider accepting their guidance. Take advantage of all the resources that are available to you without hesitation. 5. It's important to take care of yourself and safeguard your peace! Health is wealth. Take a personal day to recharge if you're feeling overwhelmed. The work is not going anywhere. It'll be waiting for you upon your return. Prioritizing your wellbeing is key to showing up as your best self.
